Jimmy Douglass

Jimmy Douglass, known as The Senator, stands as a testament to what can be achieved with passion and perseverance in the music industry. His extraordinary journey began in the early 1970s at Atlantic Records in New York City, where he started as a part-time tape duplicator while still in high school. There, he mastered the art of operating a custom-made 16-channel console and flourished under the mentorship of giants like Tom Dowd, Arif Mardin, Jerry Wexler, and Ahmet Ertegun. Wexler’s encouragement launched him into his first studio session, where he recorded a demo for a budding band, leading to remarkable collaborations with legends such as Aretha Franklin, Hall & Oates, Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, Foreigner, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC.

In the vibrant 1980s, Douglass honed his engineering skills and embraced production, working with iconic artists like The Rolling Stones, Slave, Odyssey, Roxy Music, and Gang of Four. As the 1990s began, he shifted focus to jingles and post-production, learning the art of efficiency and vibe, laying the groundwork for future success. His partnership with contemporary R&B/hip hop producer Timbaland began in 1994, where he served as the main engineer for over a decade, crafting timeless works with stars such as Aaliyah, Missy Elliot, Ginuwine, and Jay-Z.

As the millennium unfolded, Douglass continued to bring his artistic vision to life through projects with Timbaland, including collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Bjork, and Grammy-winning albums for Justin Timberlake. His impressive repertoire also includes work with Rob Thomas, Sean Paul, Kanye West, Ludacris, Al Green, John Legend, and Duran Duran. Today, Jimmy Douglass exemplifies the power of versatility and experience in the ever-evolving music landscape. Renowned for his innovative techniques, he encourages artists to push boundaries and explore new genres. His unique flair has introduced a raw edge to sound, infusing rock music with a heavy funk bass resonance. Douglass's remarkable journey and immense talent have secured his place as one of the most respected engineers and mixers in the industry, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.

Sylvia Massy

Sylvia started in the San Francisco alt-punk scene in the eighties, fronting her own all-girl band, “Revolver.” They played at iconic North Beach nightclubs like the Mabuhay, On Broadway, the Stone, and the Chi-Chi Club. Their self-produced demos caused quite a stir in the underground music scene and led to other bands seeking Sylvia's expertise in the studio. This collaboration allowed her to work with notable Bay Area acts such as Tuxedomoon, Exodus, MDC, Verbal Abuse, Christian Death, the Beatnigs, Mojo Nixon, Skid Roper, Raw Power, Doggy Style, and the Adolescents.

In 1986, Sylvia co-produced an album for the Sea Hags alongside up-and-coming guitarist Kirk Hammett, who had recently joined Metallica. The success of this collaboration facilitated the Sea Hags’ signing with major label Chrysalis Records, prompting them to relocate to Los Angeles. Not wanting to miss out, Sylvia moved to Los Angeles and embarked on a serious music industry career.

Within two years, Sylvia ended up at Larrabee Sound, where she worked with a roster of artists including Prince, Paula Abdul, Big Daddy Kane, Julio Iglesias, Seal, and Aerosmith. Her big break came when she produced Green Jello's debut album, featuring the hit “Three Little Pigs.” This success opened the door for her to record the first two Tool albums for Zoo/BMG Records.

Later, Sylvia took on major projects through her association with Rick Rubin, producing System Of A Down’s debut album, Danzig’s “Lucifuge II,” the Geto Boys’ debut, Johnny Cash’s “Unchained” album, Donovan’s “Sutras,” as well as contributions to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, and Tom Petty’s “She’s The One.”

Bob Rock

Bob Rock is a legendary producer and a prominent figure in the Canadian music scene, celebrated as a sought-after studio collaborator for international superstars. His diverse skill set has led to his involvement in numerous multi-platinum albums that span genres from heavy metal and rock to pop and adult contemporary.

Throughout his illustrious career, Rock has produced and engineered albums for iconic artists such as Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Cher, Metallica, Mötley Crüe, The Cult, and Nelly Furtado, among many others. Notably, during the Tragically Hip's tour, they paused to join Rock on stage for the release of their 2006 album *World Container*, where he received his induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

“It is an honour to join legendary producers like Bob Ezrin, Bruce Fairbairn, Daniel Lanois, Jack Richardson, and David Foster in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame,” Rock expressed. “Their influence is tremendous, and being recognized means I’ve had the privilege to work with truly great artists. I’m grateful for their trust and inspiration.” Rock’s contributions to the industry have also earned him over 20 JUNO nominations across various categories, highlighting his talent in producing, engineering, composing, and performing.

Born Robert Jens Rock in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he was raised in Victoria, B.C. He kicked off his music journey as an original member of the ’80s rock band The Payolas, known for their hit “Eyes of a Stranger.” He further explored his musical talents by forming Rock & Hyde with Payolas lead singer Paul Hyde, releasing the Canadian hit “Dirty Water.”

Despite his early achievements as a performer, Rock soon shifted his focus to producing. He began by lending his studio expertise to Canadian punk bands and his own music with The Payolas, quickly establishing himself within the hard-rock community.

Rock is perhaps most recognized for his pivotal role as the producer for Metallica, one of the most influential metal bands in history. His collaboration began in 1991 with the self-titled *Metallica* (often referred to as The Black Album), which marked the band's mainstream breakthrough and remains one of the highest-selling albums of all time. He continued to produce several of their subsequent albums, including *Load* (1996), *Re-Load* (1997), and the covers album *Garage Inc.* (1998). His work with Metallica is also featured in the 2004 documentary *Some Kind of Monster*, which showcases the creative process during a challenging chapter in the band’s evolution.

In addition to his production work, Rock has served as a recording engineer on numerous notable projects, including Bon Jovi's *Slippery When Wet*, Mötley Crüe's *Dr. Feelgood*, Veruca Salt's *Eight Arms to Hold You*, Loverboy's *Get Lucky*, and The Cult's *Sonic Temple*. He has also produced albums for a range of fellow Canadians, including Bryan Adams, Jann Arden, and Our Lady Peace.

In the mid-90s, Rock moved to Maui, Hawaii, where he established his own studio. This island location has attracted a diverse array of artists, from Michael Bublé to The Offspring, eager to record with one of the industry’s most respected names.

George Massenburg

George Massenburg stands as a pioneering figure in audio engineering, known for his enduring contributions that have shaped the industry. He authored a pivotal technical paper on "parametric equalization," presented at the 42nd convention of the Audio Engineering Society in 1972. His insights have enriched professional journals and trade magazines around the world. From 1973 to 1974, he thrived as chief engineer at Studio Europa-Sonor in Paris, playing a vital role in the installation of an expanded Neve 80-series console at Barclay Records studio. His freelance work during this era showcased his passion for engineering and equipment design throughout Europe.

Massenburg's remarkable journey includes collaborative endeavors on over four hundred record albums, where he has worked with iconic artists like Earth, Wind & Fire, James Taylor, and Billy Joel. He has designed and managed numerous recording studios, including ITI Studios, Blue Seas Recording, and The Complex in Los Angeles, while also contributing to the acoustical and architectural design of landmark studios like Skywalker Sound. In 1982, he founded George Massenburg Labs, an innovative audio electronics company known for releasing groundbreaking devices that exemplify his original circuit designs.

With products like the Parametric Equalizer and the Dynamic Range Controller, he has redefined sound engineering. Massenburg's impact extends to academia as an Associate Professor of Sound Recording at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University and through his guest lectures at prestigious institutions. His achievements have garnered widespread recognition, including the Academy of Country Music award in 1988, multiple TEC Awards, a Grammy in 1996, and an honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music. Inducted into the Technology Hall of Fame in 2005 for his invention of the ITI ME-230 Parametric Equalizer, and receiving the AES Gold Medal in 2008, Massenburg's legacy inspires future generations in the audio engineering field.

Chuck Ainlay

Producer/Engineer Chuck Ainlay boasts an impressive catalog with over 3,500 credits to his name. He has worked with iconic country music artists, including George Strait, Miranda Lambert, Vince Gill, Lady A, Steve Earle, Lee Ann Womack, Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, and The Chicks.

In addition to his country roots, Chuck has made significant contributions to more mainstream and diverse music projects, collaborating with artists like Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler, along with Peter Frampton, Taylor Swift, Lionel Richie, Ann Wilson, James Taylor, Jewel, Bob Seger, Pentatonix, and Sheryl Crow.

His expertise in surround mixing has led to groundbreaking projects, such as the 25th-anniversary remix of Peter Frampton’s *Frampton Comes Alive* and the Grammy-winning 20th-anniversary remix of Dire Straits' *Brothers In Arms*. Recent immersive mixes include George Strait’s *Pure Country*, *Troubadour*, and *Ocean Front Property*, as well as Lyle Lovett’s *12th of June*.

Chuck currently serves as a Trustee for the Nashville chapter of the Recording Academy and has held several terms on the Nashville board as Governor. He has chaired the Nashville P&E Wing and is the Co-Chair of the Recording Academy’s P&E Wing National Steering Committee. Additionally, he has coauthored many of the P&E Wing guidelines and recommendations and served on the Board of Directors for the Country Music Association. Belmont University honored Chuck with the Robert E. Mulloy Award of Excellence.

Hands on

In “hands-on” supervised recording sessions, our  Music Producers and Audio Engineers will teach students all the basics of Engineering and Music Production and organize the moving parts on a recording project.
